It’s no secret that software developers and tech-savvy business owners are earning quite a bit.
And there’s a good reason for that: it’s actually pretty good.
Software developers in the United States earn more than 1 million dollars a year, according to a recent report from the consulting firm McKinsey & Company.
But what makes them so well-paid?
According to a new study by the consulting company McKinsey, software developers are more likely to have high-end salaries than others in the tech industry.
For example, software engineers in the top 10 percent of salary earners in the U.S. earn an average of $118,000.
But the top 20 percent of software developers make $173,000, and those at the other end of the spectrum are making $108,000 per year.
That’s quite a difference, McKinsey found.
The top software developers in a similar category earned an average salary of $156,000 in 2017.
So, even though software developers earn more in the same job category, they’re not getting paid as much.
It’s not just about how much you make either: McKinsey also found that software engineers with an advanced degree were actually paid more than software developers with less education.
So if you want to make money as a software developer, you need to get a college degree.
For software engineers, that’s a huge plus.
Software engineers in this category make an average annual salary of nearly $150,000 (and they’re more likely than their counterparts to have a master’s degree).
But that doesn’t mean that they’re automatically getting paid more.
“The median software engineer salary was $116,000 for 2017, and the median software developer salary in 2019 was $118.6 million,” McKinsey wrote.
The median software engineers’ salaries in 2019 were almost twice as high as in 2017, according the firm.
And while they might make more, they might also earn less.
McKinsey concluded that software engineering salaries in the bottom 10 percent were almost five times as low as those in the middle 10 percent.
That means that software workers are earning less, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a better deal.
For one, software engineer salaries are still relatively high, with an average $126,000 salary in 2018.
The middle 10 to 20 percent make more money, but they also make less.
So for most people, the median salary for software engineers is more like $116K than $118K, but you’re paying more than most people for that kind of skill.
That may be why the median pay for software developers is so high, McKinseys found.
“Software engineers with a master degree earn a median salary of about $160,000,” McKinseys said.
“That’s less than half the median for all other professionals, and it’s lower than for sales and marketing.”
It’s also possible that software engineer and software business owners pay more in salary, as they can negotiate for better compensation.
According to McKinsey’s research, software developer salaries are more than twice as likely to be negotiated through “compensatory” contracts, which pay less than a typical hourly wage for the same work.
The “compensation” of software developer is typically determined by the company they work for, which might be different from a salary negotiation for a typical sales executive or a finance executive.
So whether or not you’re a software engineer or a business owner, it’s worth taking the time to read this McKinsey report to learn more about your salary and your options.
